If Winter Semester 2022/23 is your 1st semester

By the regular course of studies your first semester should be filled with:

Begin Base Module 1 – Computational Linguistics

The Module

To complete the module, you need to pass

  • the Study Achievement for Introduction to CL (with Python) this semester
  • the Study Achievement for Computational Linguistics and AI next semester
  • and the final exam (Examination Achievement) that follows next semester’s course and will be a written exam (90 minutes) on the module (both classes).

This semester

You have to register for "Introduction to CL (with Python)" on eCampus AND on Moodle.
You have to complete the Study achievement for this class, which consists of:

  • active participation in class (participation in discussions or group work, discussion of homework)
  • presenting at least one solution in a tutorial
  • achieve 50 % of all points in homework and pass 50 % of the homework tasks
  • passing the exam at the end of the semester.

Grade

If you pass all three parts of the module (2 SAs, 1 EA), your grade is determined by the grade you achieve in the final exam. It will count 5 % towards your final grade.

Note

ICLP will be mainly online. Details will be announced on the Moodle course, but in general you will have two Zoom sessions per week with mandatory attendance as explained on Moodle and eCampus.

If possible, we will add in-person sessions during the semester.

Begin Base Module 2 – Linguistic Data Science

The Module

To complete the module, you need to pass

  • the Study Achievement for Introduction to Linguistic Models (with R) this semester
  • The Study Achievement for Linguistic Data Science next semester
  • and the final exam (Examination Achievement) that follows next semester’s course and will be a written exam (90 minutes) on the module (both classes).

Begin the Supplementary Module

The courses you pick here strongly depend on your personal Core Topic for the program, your previous experience and – often – the conditions you were admitted under. Before you choose courses you are interested in, make sure that the conditions you were given are met!
Also remember that you have to check in with the Academic Advisor before taking a class to make sure that the course will be accepted for your Supplementary Module. And finally, remember, that you also can choose courses from TU Dortmund or Uni Duisburg-Essen.

Some courses might overlap with the program for first-semester-students, because students in higher semesters might still have to complete their Supplememtary Module.

These are some courses you might pick for the Supplementary Module this semester:
You can find the international course catalogue here.

Computer Science & Mathematics

Depending on the knowledge you already have, all courses offered at the department of Computer Science (Informatik) are valid for this. Many are offered in English (especially those for Practical Computer Science and can be found in the course catalogue online. Contact the lecturer of the courses you want to take and ask if you may participate! In some cases, you might only get a place if the courses are not full:
The following courses are just a general choice - when in doubt, ask the advisory office:

If Winter Semester 2022/23 is your 3rd semester

By the regular course of studies your second semester should be filled with:

  • Finishing Research Module 1 by completing your research project and handing it in to your advisor by March 15th 23.
  • Beginning Research Module 2 by agreeing on a new topic with an advisor.
  • Finishing Core Module 1 by picking a third advanced course in which you can pass the exam achievement.
  • Beginning and finishing Core Module 2 by picking two advanced courses, in which you pass the SA, and a third one where you pass the SA and the EA.

If you have passed the SA in BM1 or BM2 last year, but have not passed the second part of BM 1 or BM 2, we recommend participating in the respective course as a "listener" at least to keep your knowledge up to date for the next semester. You won't have to hand in homework and won't be part of groups working on a solution, but you can read the slides and participate in the tutorials if you like.

If you follow an individual course plan and are not sure which courses to take, contact the advisory office!

There is no additional explanation on Finishing Research Module 1 and Core Module 1 here. You can check the Student Guide or the Explanations for last semester.

Begin Research Module 2

The Module

To complete the module, you need to pass

  • SA1: The Project Closing Seminar by active participation in two block days and reflection during next semester
  • SA2: Your Research Project documentation – planning, researching and writing during this and the next semester
  • EA: Active participation in Colloquium during next semester & Presentation of your project in one of the Colloquium’s sessions.

This Semester

You will start your second Research project and learn more about exchanging ideas with your colleagues, presenting a concept and giving and handling constructive criticism about your project. Based on your experiences with the First Research project, you can pick a new topic or continue your work.

To find the right research project for you, look the possibilities up in our Moodle course!
After you found an advsior and project, register here.

Grade

Your Supervisor for the project will grade your presentation in the colloquium and the way you handle feedback from others and give your own for their ideas next semester. The grade will count 17,5 % to your total grade.

Note

You can do your research project in a group of up to five students.
Your second project (and your Master Thesis) can build on this first project, but it does not have to!

Finish Core Module 1 and Core Module 2

The Module - for both

To complete this module, you need to pass:

  • the SA in three different Advanced courses.
  • the EA in one of those courses.

Each Advanced Course belongs to one or two Core Topics (Theoretical Linguistics, Linguistic Data Science, or Computational Linguistics). Each of your two Core Modules needs to belong to one Core Topic – you ensure this by picking two courses from one focus area.

This Semester

For CM1, you will participate in one Advanced courses and should pass the SA and the EA.
For CM2, you will participate in three Advanced Courses and should pass the SA in each course and the EA in one.
So, in total you will participate in four AC, pass four SAs and two EAs.

This semester, we offer these courses these courses.

Grade

The grade for this module will be determined by the EA you pass for one of the three courses. You are free to choose the course where you add the EA to the SA. The grade will count 12,5 % towards your total grade.

Note

You cannot add the EA in a course without passing the SA in the same course. If you are interested in a course this semester, feel free to ask the lecturer about taking the EA. Note that when your EA for the first Core Module is oral (Presentation, Oral Exam), your EA for the second Core Module has to be written (Small Paper, Thesis, written exam) and vice versa.
